If you have been reading my other posts about age proofing your eyes you are aware that the aging process plays a large part in the changes that affect the skin around your eyes.
Just like the weakening of connective tissue can cause puffiness or under eye bags, the weakening of connective tissues can also cause sunken eyes-that hollowed out look around the eyes due to fat loss or a shift in the fat under the eyes.
Unlike other aging processes, this particular condition is probably the hardest one to resolve at home. In fact, there is a limited amount of what you CAN do with over the counter products for deeply sunken eyes.
For the best results, you need to talk to a good plastic surgeon to discuss options like fillers such as Restylane and Belotero which can be used to fill out the concave areas.
Another option is fat grafting which is when a plastic surgeon removes fat from elsewhere on your body and injects it around the eyes to fill out the concave areas.
Unfortunately, neither of these options are cheap and, in the case of fat grafting, the results tend to be permanent. Some people may prefer to use substances from their own body and one advantage is that the results are long lasting and even in some cases, permanent. The disadvantage is that if you don't like the way you look, there is no easy fix and you will be likely stuck with the results.
Fillers on the other hand are more flexible. They can last up to 12 months and if you don't like the way you look, a solution can be injected into the skin to dissolve the fillers.
For people who are only just beginning to notice that shift in fat, and prefer not to go the surgical route, there are products that can improve and make the appearance of sunken eyes less noticeable.
Products that encourage the plumping of the skin can also be effective in diminishing that hollow eyed look. The key is to find products that stimulate the production of collagen. Thankfully, there are a number of ingredients that can do that.
Retinoids (vitamin C), peptides, hyaluronic acid and stem cell extracts are some that are helpful as well as at lasers treatments that are now readily available for in home use, are also an option.
